Friends of Children (FoC) volunteers waited patiently for the shuttle buses arranged to transport beneficiaries to arrive to NTU on the 11 June 2016, all prepared to kick start an exciting day with lots of fun from trying out the stations at our “Elements of Nature” event!
One popular station was ‘Fiery Soldier’. 11-year old Sally described it as her favourite station because it allowed her to “express her anger” in a constructive way. Even though having fun is a crucial purpose of the event, Foc also stresses upon the importance of incorporating an educational value into their games. ‘Fill the Pail’ was another well-like station that taught the beneficiaries important values. According to Divya, 14, it allowed her to “pair up with [her] friends” and “learn about teamwork”. The “Hot Air Balloon” station also saw beneficiaires mixing vinegar, water and so on to stimulate a chemical reaction that would mimic the science behind a volcanic reaction.
Beneficiaries were first handed a slip of paper each for them to track the number of points earned at each station. The accumulated points earned could be exchanged for snacks, toys or stationery at the end of the event, giving the children a certain degree of liberty to and learn how to make their own decisions.
For some, the best part of the event was the goodie bags packed with a list of fun items such as rainbow looms, notebooks and even canned food, all thanks to the courtesy of our generous sponsors that include the National Youth Council (Singapore), KPMG, Swensen’s, The Cocoa Trees, Pastamania, and many more!
